Prologue

The Earth, as it was known before the year 2100, has ended. Life, however, managed to go on. The Earth's magnetic field collapsed in this year resulting in a massive EMP burst all over the world, wiping out all electronics and causing a lot of natural disasters to occur. The Yellowstone Park Supervolcano exploded, blotting out the sun for a few months, severely damaging the planets environment. The next few years exposure to the cosmic rays from the sun killed off a great many animals and people while those that were left were changed. Humanity had lost around seventy five percent of its total population. Around fifteen percent of them manifested some kind of mutation. It is theorised that due to exposure to the Cosmic rays of the sun (and perhaps other kinds of currently unidentified radiation) opened up the possibility for a 256 letter DNA alphabet, which also made the proteins within living stuctures to evolve to be quadruplet coded through the need to survive the new radiation. The majority of mutations affected people mentally, with a few being affected physically. However, these did not appear straight away. It wasn't until 2465, over three and a half centuries since the initial incedent, did humanities evolution become clear.

Of the physical mutations there were a few well known ones. Greatly enhanced strength to the point where the person was vastly larger than a normal human, and able to life small cars with ease. Some others manifested mutations as an enhanced speed and reactions, as such they could run much faster than humans. Then we have the mental mutations. It would seem that exposure to the cosmic rays of the sun, or some other source from space, enhanced and opened up some of the contained abilities of the brain. Some people manifested this in incredible ways. There were a few who managed to control objects out of the physical reach of their bodies, minor telekinesis was common. Also there have been a small amount of cases of slight telepathy. Reading the surface thoughts of some people lead to normal people hating those who manifested some kind of power. The most powerful, and as such dangerous, was those with the power to control the elements. Thankfully this was an incredibly rare mutation, with only around ten known ones happening every twenty years. But of these sometimes there is a severe mutation that results in the person having control over two. Funnily enough these tend to be opposing elements. Only two of these mutations have ever happened, and both have survived to the present year of 2500 AD. The collective term for a person with a power is a Phate. People with more than one power (in the case of the due elementalists) are called Xenomphates.

Animals were also affected. Wolves and Bears grew much bigger, and their claws and teeth lengthened slightly. The massive wolf packs are able to hunt and take on fully armed human parties. A single bear is double the height of a man, and almost three broad. They are truly fearsome creatures, able to take a bullet to the chest and still tear through several men before needing to flee to heal. There have been very few recorded kills of a Great Bear since they were discovered in what was North America in 2306 with even the elemental controlling humans fearing them. Wolf Packs number around five wolves and commonly hunt down humans. They are able to be killed but if a Great Wolf senses one of its kind die nearby all the ones around will be driven into a frenzy and feel no pain. The feline creatures also mutated. Most became much faster and more vicious. Still hunting in packs, but now no human could ever hope to deal with them.

Herbivores also "evolved". Through necessity many of them also got bigger and tougher. Elephants were now the size of a small building when fully grown, after fifty years. They also live in families of around twenty creatures. Other herbivores have been known to be much faster than their ancestors while becoming a lot smaller, so they are harder for the predators to catch.

The water is also no longer safe. Everything in there now is a carniverous creature, out to kill anything that enters. Small rivers are safe, and some man made lakes as well, but the ocean and sea are definate no go areas without a boat. Sharks have been known to crush shark cages completely to get at the human inside.

All human cities are now surrounded by a massive two story wall, with soldiers stationed on them twenty four hours a day to watch for dangerous animals and other invaders.

Despite the damage done to humanity by nature its worst enemy is still itself. There are now only five governing bodies. The European United Coalition (EUC), the United States of America (Canada was annexed into them), the Panasian Alliance (PA), the South American Formation (SAF), and the African Union (AU). Diplomacy between the four nations has not been the best in recent years, and there is word of a full world war to erupt, with the Europeans and the Americans arguing with the Asians and the South Americans. The Africans have entered the discussions in the hope that the war will not start, as that is the most likely place that battle will break out if it does.
